Trump and Melania Switch Helicopters After Hydraulics Issue During UK Visit
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were forced to switch helicopters during their visit to the United Kingdom after the aircraft experienced a reported hydraulics issue, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Leavitt told reporters that the pilots decided to land at a local airfield as a precaution before the helicopter reached Stansted Airport.
“Out of an abundance of caution, the pilots landed at a local airfield before reaching Stansted Airport,” Leavitt said. “The president and first lady safely boarded the support helicopter.”
The flight was originally expected to take about 20 minutes from Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Chequers landing zone to Stansted Airport. Instead, the journey took nearly 40 minutes because of the helicopter issue. No injuries were reported, and Trump and Melania continued their schedule.
Investment and Technology Partnership
Trump and Melania were in Britain for an unusual second state visit hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The visit included discussions focused on the U.S.-UK relationship, trade, technology, energy, and investment.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised a reported £250 billion mutual investment package involving the United States and United Kingdom, describing the two nations as having one of the most “natural partnerships in the world.”
Trump began the day at Windsor Castle with King Charles III before traveling by Marine One to Chequers, the prime minister’s country residence, for meetings involving political and business issues.
Following private discussions, Trump and Starmer met with business leaders at a reception. Their discussions were expected to include major international issues, including Ukraine, Gaza, the environment, and free speech.
Starmer described the new agreement as a “tech-prosperity deal.” Trump said the arrangement would create billions of dollars in opportunities while giving the United States greater access to Britain’s aerospace industry.
The agreement also emphasizes cooperation in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, fusion, 6G technology, and civil nuclear energy.
Trump said the deal had already helped encourage more than $350 billion in private-sector agreements, including a reported $136 billion investment from Blackstone.
Nuclear Energy and AI
Trump also highlighted cooperation between American energy company X-energy and British company Centrica on the potential deployment of modular nuclear reactors across the United Kingdom.
According to Trump, the project could generate more than $50 billion in economic value, create as many as 2,500 jobs, and provide electricity for approximately 1.5 million homes.
Trump also pointed to the legacy of British mathematician and computer pioneer Alan Turing, saying the partnership could help the United States and Britain compete in the future of artificial intelligence.
“The energy—you need the energy,” Trump said, emphasizing that the rapid growth of AI will require enormous amounts of electricity.
The visit underscored the broader effort by Washington and London to deepen cooperation in technology, energy, defense, and investment while strengthening their long-standing alliance.
