A major security scare unfolded in Washington, D.C., on the evening of April 25, 2026, when an armed man attempted to breach security at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, prompting the immediate evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, senior administration officials, members of Congress, and hundreds of journalists attending the annual event at the Washington Hilton.

Often referred to as “Nerd Prom,” the prestigious gathering had only been underway for about 20 minutes after the president and first lady arrived when the incident disrupted the evening. According to federal authorities, the suspect attempted to force his way through a secured checkpoint before advancing toward the hotel’s main ballroom, where the guests were assembled.

Investigators identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California. Officials said Allen, a teacher, video game developer, and graduate of the California Institute of Technology, arrived heavily armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and several knives. His actions immediately triggered a rapid response from U.S. Secret Service agents and other law enforcement officers stationed at the venue.

Authorities said Secret Service personnel intercepted Allen inside the hotel lobby before he could enter the ballroom. A violent confrontation followed, during which gunfire was exchanged. One Secret Service agent was struck in the chest at close range, but the officer’s ballistic vest prevented potentially fatal injuries. The wounded agent was transported to a nearby hospital, treated for non-life-threatening injuries, and later reported to be in stable condition. Allen sustained minor injuries during the struggle before being taken into federal custody.

Within minutes of the confrontation, security officials ordered the complete evacuation of the hotel. Armed officers thoroughly searched the building to ensure there were no additional suspects or threats. Although organizers briefly discussed continuing the event once the situation had been secured, the White House Correspondents’ Association ultimately decided to cancel the remainder of the dinner out of caution while investigators completed their work.

President Trump later praised the swift response of the Secret Service, saying their professionalism and quick action prevented what could have become a much more serious tragedy. He also expressed support for the decision to evacuate the venue and emphasized that protecting the lives of everyone in attendance had to remain the top priority.

Federal investigators have launched a comprehensive investigation into Allen’s background, communications, and possible motives. Authorities have searched his California residence and are reviewing writings and messages reportedly sent to family members before the incident. At this stage, investigators believe Allen acted alone and have found no immediate evidence suggesting a broader conspiracy or continuing threat.

The attempted attack has renewed concerns about security at major political events in the nation’s capital. Officials are expected to conduct a thorough review of existing security pro.cedures to determine how an armed individual was able to approach one of Washington’s most heavily protected annual gatherings before being stopped by federal agents
