South Carolina governor selects Darline Graham Nordone, Lindsey Graham’s sister, to finish his Senate term

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced Monday that he has appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, to temporarily fill his U.S. Senate seat following the senator’s unexpected death over the weekend.

Speaking alongside McMaster at a news conference in Columbia, Nordone called the appointment a tremendous honor and pledged to continue the work her brother began. She promised to support President Donald Trump and represent the people of South Carolina faithfully during the remainder of the term.

“Lindsey has always been there for me, and now I will be there for him,” Nordone said. “It is such a privilege to finish some of his important work.” Holding back emotion, she added, “To Lindsey, I miss you more than I can put into words. But I’m going to do this. I got it.”

McMaster revealed that he asked Nordone early Sunday morning to accept the appointment, praising her willingness to serve. “I was humbled by your quickness to see the duty that you had to serve,” the governor said.

President Donald Trump publicly endorsed the decision earlier Monday, writing on Truth Social that he had recommended Nordone for the temporary appointment. Trump described her as Lindsey Graham’s “wonderful sister” and said the appointment would be “a fabulous tribute” to the longtime senator.

Under South Carolina law, the governor has the authority to appoint an interim senator to fill a vacancy. However, because Graham was already seeking reelection this year, a special Republican primary will determine the party’s nominee for the November general election.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressed support for the appointment before McMaster’s announcement, saying it would be a fitting way to honor Graham’s legacy while ensuring continuity in the Senate.

Darline Graham Nordone has shared a close bond with her brother throughout their lives. After their parents died within 15 months of each other in the 1970s, Lindsey Graham became her legal guardian while attending college and serving in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. His decision allowed her to receive military benefits and helped keep the family together during a difficult period.

The temporary appointment comes as South Carolina Republicans prepare for a competitive special primary. Several prominent Republicans, including Representatives Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, are considered possible candidates. The eventual Republican nominee is expected to face Democrat Annie Andrews in the November general election.
