Lindsey Graham Primary Election In S.C. Called

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham secured a decisive victory Tuesday in the Republican primary, defeating businessman Mark Lynch in a race that drew national attention as Republicans work to defend their Senate majority ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Backed by President Donald Trump, Graham campaigned on his conservative record, emphasizing his opposition to Democratic priorities such as expanding the Supreme Court and changing the Electoral College. His longstanding influence in Washington and strong support among South Carolina Republicans helped reinforce his position as the overwhelming favorite.

Lynch’s campaign, meanwhile, was overshadowed by a series of controversies. Reports questioned his financial disclosures, alleging unpaid federal taxes for the 2025 tax year and raising concerns about the source of approximately $5 million he personally contributed to his campaign. An ethics complaint has reportedly called for a Senate investigation into his finances and campaign funding.

Additional scrutiny focused on Lynch’s past, including his 1984 felony cocaine trafficking conviction, which he has described as part of a personal redemption story. Questions also emerged over his claim of receiving a presidential pardon, as reports indicated no publicly available records confirming it. Other reports revisited a 1985 legal case involving a traffic incident and highlighted criticism over previous comments about legalizing cocaine.

The race also featured high-profile political endorsements. Trump strongly backed Graham, calling Lynch unfit for office, while former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene endorsed Lynch, criticizing Graham’s record. Graham’s campaign argued the contest represented a choice between Republicans aligned with Trump’s agenda and those they viewed as opposing it.

With his primary victory, Graham now heads into the general election as the clear favorite to retain his Senate seat in the reliably Republican state.
