Here’s What We Know About About Lindsey Graham’s Cause of Death

Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina died Saturday night at the age of 71, ending a career that spanned decades of military and public service. His death came as a shock, with no publicly known serious health issues beforehand. Just two days earlier, Graham had been in Kyiv meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss efforts to end the war in Ukraine. He was also expected to appear on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday.

Emergency responders were called to Graham’s Capitol Hill residence Saturday evening after reports of a medical emergency. He was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. While reports have referenced a possible cardiac arrest, officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause of death. His family has requested privacy during this difficult time.

President Donald Trump led the tributes, describing Graham as “one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known,” praising his patriotism and dedication to the country. Messages of remembrance also came from leaders around the world, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Zelenskyy, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and Senate colleagues, all recognizing his steadfast support for democracy, national security, and America’s allies.

Graham served more than three decades in the Air Force Reserve before devoting his life to the U.S. Senate. Throughout his career, he became one of the nation’s most recognizable Republican voices on foreign policy and national defense. His passionate defense of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh during the 2018 confirmation hearings remains one of the defining moments of his Senate career.

With Graham’s passing, South Carolina will begin the legal process of filling his Senate seat. Governor Henry McMaster is expected to appoint an interim senator until voters elect a successor. Graham leaves behind a lasting legacy of service, leadership, and commitment to his country.
