A 24-year-old Democrat won a major special election in South Carolina, capturing a seat in the state House of Representatives in District 50, an area represented in the U.S. Senate by Lindsey Graham. After the victory, the newly elected lawmaker thanked supporters, saying the win belonged to the residents of the district and expressing gratitude for their confidence.
Keishan Scott received congratulations from Ken Martin, who argued that Democrats can continue to make gains if Republicans remain focused on policies that Democrats say favor wealthy Americans over working families.
The election came as Senator Graham faced renewed criticism over comments made during a visit to Ukraine. While meeting with Ukrainian leaders, Graham said Congress was prepared to increase pressure on Russia regardless of whether President Donald Trump supported additional action. He also praised Ukraine’s recent drone strike targeting Russian military aircraft, describing it as an example of creative military strategy.
Those remarks drew criticism from former Trump adviser Steve Bannon during an interview with Chris Cuomo on NewsNation. Bannon argued that Graham’s statements could give Ukraine unrealistic expectations about U.S. support and risk drawing the United States deeper into the conflict. He controversially suggested Graham’s passport should be revoked or that he should face detention upon returning to the U.S.
Cuomo strongly disagreed with that proposal, arguing that public officials should not face imprisonment simply for expressing political views. While acknowledging concerns about the risks of escalation in the war, Cuomo maintained that disagreements over foreign policy should be resolved through public debate rather than legal punishment.
