A major security incident disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25, 2026, prompting the evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior officials from the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. The event was halted after an armed suspect attempted to breach a Secret Service security checkpoint near the ballroom.

Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California. According to investigators, Allen was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives when he rushed toward the secured area. Secret Service agents confronted him before he reached the ballroom, and gunfire was exchanged. One Secret Service agent was struck in a protective vest and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Allen was taken into custody after the confrontation.

Thousands of attendees, including journalists, lawmakers, and administration officials, were evacuated safely. The White House Correspondents’ Association canceled the remainder of the dinner, citing security concerns. President Trump later praised the Secret Service for its response and said public safety had to take priority.

Federal investigators continue to examine Allen’s background, digital evidence, writings, and possible motive. Prosecutors have charged him with attempted assassination of the president and several related federal offenses. Authorities have said they currently believe he acted alone, and no ongoing threat to the public has been identified. The incident has renewed debate over security procedures at major political events in Washington.
