Texas redistricting reshaped the political landscape in Houston and led to a high-profile Democratic runoff between two sitting members of Congress. Rep. Christian Menefee defeated longtime incumbent Rep. Al Green in the race for the heavily Democratic 18th Congressional District after neither candidate secured a majority in the initial primary election.
The contest emerged after new district boundaries placed both lawmakers in the same district, forcing them to compete against one another. Menefee finished ahead in the primary, setting up the runoff that ultimately decided the nomination.
Green, known nationally as one of President Donald Trump’s most outspoken critics, has repeatedly sought impeachment proceedings against Trump and has drawn attention for protesting during presidential addresses. During the campaign, Green argued that significant spending by crypto-industry-backed groups contributed to the challenge he faced.
Menefee now advances to the general election, where he will face Republican Ronald Whitfield. Given the district’s strong Democratic lean, Menefee enters the November race as the clear favorite.
